Planning fees are set to rise on 1st April 2025:
- What is happening?
Planning fees for some applications in the UK are to rise on 1st April 2025.
- Why is it happening?
The UK Government has outlined that planning fees have not risen to keep up with inflation and do not cover the actual costs to Local Planning Authorities of processing planning applications.
- Who sets planning fees?
Planning fees in England are set nationally by the government and are detailed in the Town and Country Planning (Fees for Applications, Deemed Applications, Requests and Site Visits) (England) Regulations 2012, as amended.
- How often are fees increased?
A general increase to the planning fees was introduced by the Town and Country Planning (Fees for Applications, Deemed Applications, Requests and Site Visits) (England) (Amendment) Regulations 2023. Local planning authorities use the 2012 Fees Regulations, as amended, to charge the correct fee for each application, based on the details of the application.
The Town and Country Planning (Fees for Applications, Deemed Applications, Requests and Site Visits) (England) (Amendment) Regulations 2023 introduced an automatic, annual increase. This will increase planning fees annually, on 1 April each year, starting on 1 April 2025. All planning fees will be increased by the rate of inflation, as measured by the Consumer Prices Index from the preceding September. The increase will be capped at 10%, even if the inflation rate is higher. The fees will not be changed if there is negative inflation (deflation).
